This expressive ceramic sculpture in the form of a stylized elephant comes from the studio of Helmut Schäffenacker (1921–2010). The attribution is secured by the original Schäffenacker sticker on the object. The reduced, almost archaic form language, the characteristic dot eyes, and the warm earth and ochre glazes reflect the unmistakable style of the Ulm-based artist. Schäffenacker is counted among the most significant German ceramic artists of the postwar period and, in addition to his well-known wall reliefs, created numerous animal sculptures, vessel sculptures, and ceramic uniques or small editions.
His works combine sculptural expressiveness with an organic formal language and are internationally sought after by collectors of German studio pottery and mid-century designs. The sculpture is suitable both as an independent collector’s piece and as a decorative object of modern ceramic art.
