In this iconic story from 1953, Lambiek plays the role of the musketeer D'Artagnan.

Although Willy Vandersteen's signature is underneath, the drawing of Lambiek as a musketeer with three strands of hair and the handwritten text "From the heart for STEFAN" was drawn by his successor, Paul Geerts.
In the original newspaper version and early albums from the 1950s, Willy Vandersteen drew Lambiek with a rounder head, a thicker mustache and often tufts of hair. Only much later, when the albums from the 1970s were reissued in color on a large scale and Paul Geerts took over the series, did Lambiek gain his tight, modern look with exactly the three iconic, thin strands of hair on either side.
Paul Geerts took over the drawing from 1972 and spent the 70s and 80s at countless comic fairs signing. He drew on request (such as Lambiek as a musketeer), wrote above it in his own handwriting "From the heart for..." but traditionally placed the official, stylized signature of Willy Vandersteen under the work.
