Baroque French mirror from Louis XIV period, in wood carved, polychromed and gilded with gold leaf – 66 × 41 cm

Piece of notable artistic quality and extraordinary presence, made in hand-carved wood, with remnants of polychrome and gold leaf, following models of Hispano-colonial Baroque. The composition presents an elegant pierced pediment with floral decoration, abundant scrolls, vegetal motifs and small side mirrors that enrich the ensemble and give it a strong personality.

The first thing that catches the eye is the depth of the carving. It is not superficial decoration, but an authentic sculptural work executed by hand, with very marked volumes, delicate ornamental details and a patina that only time provides.

It preserves its original glass with the characteristic peripheral oxidation typical of historical mirrors, a feature highly valued by collectors as it reflects its age and authenticity. The small decorative mirrors likewise retain that attractive look inherent to antique lunette mirrors.

The back is especially interesting. It is constructed using traditional techniques, with antique boards, manual assemblies and a completely artisanal execution. The reverse shows very careful workmanship, something not common in later pieces and usually found in high-quality mirrors made by master artisans.

The frame preserves remnants of its old gilding and original polychromy, with the natural wear of the centuries. That patina, together with small losses and signs of use, adds authenticity and is precisely one of the qualities most valued in these pieces by collectors and specialists.

Good structural condition considering its age.

Shows the wear typical of a piece with several centuries of history: occasional losses of gilding, small marks, craquelure and natural oxidation of the glass. All of this is visible in the photographs and is coherent with an antique work of these characteristics.

Notes

Due to its typology, construction technique, quality of carving, polychromy and gilding, it can be attributed to the Hispano-colonial Baroque sphere, probably late 18th to early 19th century. However, since it does not come with documentation or an expert report, this attribution is made on stylistic and constructive criteria, not as an absolute certification.
