Masque antelope, an original Markha mask from Mali in wood and brass, dating to the late 20th century, 67 cm high and 20 cm wide, with provenance from Galerie/Antiquaire.
Description from the seller
The Marka are an ethnic group very close to the Bambara, whose art is notably characterized by their masks covered with brass plates, like this one.
Among the Marka, Do is the spirit to whom the masks give form and which constitutes its expression.
Do comes from the bush via the leaf mask and, in some mythical cases, via masks made of fibers with a carved wooden head.
In the religious system of Marka society, Do is the most invoked and its cult the most elaborate.
The Marka are organized into mask societies that are structured and hierarchical.
There exists an initiatory language of communication among the initiated. Object in very good condition, no restoration, well preserved in its natural state.
Shipment by registered mail with signature.
