Description from the seller
Antique Russian icon of the Evangelist "John" from the 19th century (circa 1850).
Hand-painted with egg tempera colors on a wooden panel with a chalk ground and gold ground. Typical method of icon production in 18th and 19th century Tsarist Russia.
The subject is relatively rare and highly popular in the Orthodox Church.
This is an Old Believers icon. The painting is quite masterful and detailed.
Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic chipping/crackle (see photos). Minimal partial restorations are present (see photos).
Especially expressive and striking is the face of the Saint (see photos). The Saint is labeled. The inscriptions are clearly legible.
