Vintage medical diagnostic set SMIC for eyes, ears, nose, and larynx, complete with original briefcase
Interesting vintage medical diagnostic set produced in the People’s Republic of China by SMIC – Shanghai Medical Instruments Co., intended for examination of eyes, ears, nose, and larynx.
The set is preserved in its elegant original wooden briefcase, with blue velvet-lined interior shaped to fit. On the case there is the original plaque bearing the inscription:
“Diagnostic Set for Eye, Ear, Nose & Larynx – Made in the People’s Republic of China”
and the mark of the French distributor SIMEPO, Les Riceys, France.
The equipment includes several diagnostic instruments and accessories, including:
oftalmoscope;
ovtoscope; (Note: keep as otoscope, correction below)
nasal speculum;
a set of auricular (ear) specula of different sizes;
laryngeal mirrors;
illuminator and interchangeable accessories;
power handle;
small light bulbs and spare components.
The set appears well preserved and rich in accessories. Some empty housings are present, therefore it is not possible to guarantee absolute completeness regarding the original equipment.
As it has not been tested, it is offered as unverified in operation and sold mainly as a collectible object, medical furnishing, or historical testimony of twentieth-century diagnostic instrumentation.
Estimated period: around the 1950s/1960s.
Briefcase dimensions: about 31 × 17 × 7 cm.
Overall condition good, with normal signs of age, light traces of use and dust on the inner lining, as visible in the photographs. The images constitute an integral part of the description.
