18th–19th Century Antique Hand-Painted Folding Fan – Pierced Mother-of-Pearl Sticks – Religious/Mythological Scenes – Framed
Description
An elegant European antique folding fan dating approximately from the 18th to 19th century, displaying a refined classical and courtly decorative style.
The painted leaf features several finely executed figural scenes with men and women in period dress, set within pastoral and landscape settings. The compositions appear to have a religious, mythological or allegorical character, possibly influenced by Biblical stories or classical European mythology. The exact iconography has not been conclusively identified.
The sticks are made of mother-of-pearl, finely pierced and decorated with ornamental and floral details. The natural iridescence of the mother-of-pearl creates subtle variations in colour under different lighting, adding to the elegant and luxurious appearance of the fan.
The fan is presented in a shaped display frame with a burgundy textile background and gilt trim, making it ready for display.
Due to its age, the fan shows signs of wear and ageing consistent with an antique object, including some fading, rubbing, wear along the folds and minor losses to the edges of the painted leaf.
