Description from the seller
Massive Wall Coat Rack for Entrance in Solid Wood and Brass – Umbertine Style / Early 1900s
Exclusive and imposing wall-mounted coat rack (or entrance paneling): superb testament to Italian cabinetmaking at the end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th century (full Umbertine period or early 1900s).
This refined furnishing piece is entirely crafted in high-quality solid wood (presumably walnut or stained chestnut), characterized by a warm, deep dark tone that highlights the wood’s natural grain.
The structure features a classical and austere architectural line:
At the top rises a substantial molded cornice in a cap style, typical of noble furnishings of the era.
Immediately below is a practical ash-tray/hat rack shelf, supported laterally by two sturdy curved tubular supports in solid brass.
The central body is divided into elegant geometric paneled sections with a raised panel motif, framed by raised geometric profiles.
The base rests on a protruding wooden plinth, solid and well squared.
Hardware details
The coat rack is equipped with 5 majestic double coat hooks (with a long upper hook and a lower ring for umbrellas or bags) made in cast/brunet brass with a distinctly antique charm. The hardware bears a beautiful patina of age.
Condition
The piece presents good structural and general conservation conditions, solid and ready to be hung. Being an authentic antique, it shows the normal and fascinating signs of time that testify to its history:
On the left side profile of the wood there are some superficial abrasions and traces of white paint/wall plaster (easily removable with a light restoration or cleaning).
The upper shelf surface and the base show a natural patina from use and age-old dust.
Some fixing screws for the brass hooks have been partially replaced over time for maintenance (as visible in the detail photos, some hooks have newer slotted screws and others have period screws).
A piece of great character, perfect for enhancing entrances of historic homes and farmhouses, as well as as a contrasting element in modern lofts with industrial or eclectic design.
