Exceptionally signed copy on the title page by Ferdinando Scianna (born 1943), unique and unobtainable as a signed copy on the internet. 230 pages and nearly 200 black-and-white photographs, most full-page, in a very high-quality print. Ferdiando Scianna was born in 1943 in Bagheria near Palermo, Sicily. He began photographing his native Sicily at a very young age and, after studying philosophy and art history, immediately published a book “Feste Religiose in Sicilia” in which his photographs were accompanied by text by the famous writer Leonardo Sciascia. This book quickly achieved great success and is recognized as an important photographic book; referenced in Photobook by Parr & Badger (volume 3, page 111). In 1967, Ferdinando Scianna moved to Milan and began working for the weekly L'Europeo as a photographer and journalist, and he would become the Paris correspondent for that weekly in the 1970s. During those Parisian years, Ferdinando Scianna became friends with Henri Cartier-Bresson and in 1982 joined Magnum Photos. Chance also turns him into a fashion photographer for Dolce & Gabbana, and the book Marpessa, born from this initial experience, is today highly sought after. Throughout these years, Ferdiando Scianna traveled the world as a journalist and then as a photographer of international renown, but his photographic work always remained faithful to Sicily, which he photographed tirelessly. This anthology, published in 1989 when he was only 46, is the perfect illustration of that with its photographs of Sicily and beyond.
