This monographic work sums up the career of the famous Sicilian photographer Ferdinando Scianna in all its facets. Edited by Michele Smargiassi. With a selection of photos commented by Francesco Merlo.

Ferdinando Scianna, born in Bagheria in 1943, is one of the most important Italian photojournalists in the world and the first ever to enter the prestigious Magnum Photos agency.
His career takes off in the Sixties thanks to the partnership with writer Leonardo Sciascia, with whom he publishes the famous volume Religious Festivals in Sicily. Moving first to Milan and then to Paris, he works for years as a roving correspondent and befriends Henri Cartier-Bresson, who introduces him to Magnum in 1982. In the Eighties he revolutionizes fashion photography by staging the historic Dolce & Gabbana campaigns in the back streets of Sicily with model Marpessa Hennink. His style, strictly black and white and characterized by strong contrasts of light and shadow, rejects artificial posing to tell reality with the spontaneity typical of reportage.
