Chess table - Wood - Chessboard

Beautiful old chess coffee table with an inlaid wooden chessboard and an elegant central pedestal on four carved legs with wood grain.

Probably made in the period 1920–1935, in historical (Queen Anne) style. The top is made from different types of wood with an inlaid chessboard of real wood. The base is solid and sturdy; I recently tightened the screws.

The top and the edge: I suspect walnut. The light chess squares: maple or birch. The dark chess squares: rosewood (palissander) or a strongly grained walnut type. The central pedestal and legs: solid beech or walnut.

I’m not sure about the wood species, but I suspect the above due to what was common in the period when it was made.

Purchased once from an older couple who received the table as a wedding gift from an antique dealer. I have used it little myself because I wanted to be careful with it; also the reason I would like to sell it to someone who has space for it and will enjoy it. I’m always afraid I’ll damage it, so I don’t use it much.

It has signs of use that fit its age. The wood has been carefully cared for with beeswax, allowing the warm color and wood grain to come nicely into their own.
