Raku Vase

Being handmade, there may be slight variations in size and color compared to photos and among the different pieces in the same series.

A vase shaped and hand-turned, with crackled blue glaze on a body of white chamotte clay (5%).

The piece was created using the Raku process. A traditional Japanese ceramic firing technique dating back to the 16th century. This method is characterized by its spectacular and unpredictable aesthetics, with glazes and decorations that often take on unique and unrepeatable effects.

The piece was fired in a first firing in a neutral atmosphere for about nine hours at 880°C and subsequently, after applying the glaze, it was fired a second time in a gas-fired kiln at 980°C,

Once the object reaches the desired temperature and the glazes have fused, it is quickly removed from the kiln with tongs.

Once removed from the kiln, the object is immediately immersed in a combustible material (in this case sawdust).

This causes an accelerated oxidation reaction, which leads to cracks in the glaze.

The vases themselves are highly vitrified and waterproof; there is nothing toxic or dangerous that could leak out.

Remember, this is not factory-produced mass ceramic ware; each vase is individual. All pieces are entirely handmade, wheel-thrown, and glazed in my studio in Lecco, Italy
