Vaso Raku

Because this is artisanal work, there may be slight variations in size and color compared to the photos and among different pieces of the same series.

A vase shaped and turned by hand, with a crackle white glazed tone on a body of chamotte white clay at 5%.

The piece was created using the Raku process. A traditional Japanese pottery firing technique dating back to the 16th century. This method is characterized by its spectacular and unpredictable aesthetics, with glazes and decorations that often take on unique and unreproducible effects.

The piece was fired in a first firing in a neutral atmosphere for about nine hours at 880ºC and subsequently, after the glaze was applied, it was fired a second time in a gas oven at 980°C.

Once the object reaches the desired temperature and the glazes have fused, it is quickly removed from the oven with tongs.

Once removed from the oven, the object is immediately immersed in a combustible material (in this case, sawdust).

This causes an accelerated oxidation reaction, which leads to cracks in the glaze.

The vases themselves are highly vitrified and waterproof; there is nothing toxic or dangerous that could leach out.

Remember, this is not factory-produced, mass-market ceramic; each vase is individual. All pieces are entirely hand-modeled, turned, and glazed in my studio in Lecco, Italy
