A pair of Art Deco bookends titled "Moyen Âge" (Reading Medieval Ladies). Max Le Verrier – France – circa 1930.
A stunning and iconic pair of original French Art Deco bookends titled "Moyen Âge", designed by the world-renowned sculptor Max Le Verrier (1891–1973). This specific model dates from circa 1930 and features two seated medieval ladies, wholly absorbed in their book.
The design is a perfect example of the high Art Deco period: historical and romantic influences combined with the sleek, geometric, and modernist vocabulary for which Le Verrier is known. The ladies wear the characteristic pointed hennin headdresses and stylized gowns with sharp folds.
