Description from the seller
German Art Nouveau / Jugendstil Silver Serving Set – 6 Pieces – 800 Silver filled Handles – c. 1900–1915
An elegant and decorative German Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) serving set, comprising six matching serving pieces with beautifully sculpted 800 silver handles. The handles are richly decorated with flowing floral and organic motifs, characteristic of the Jugendstil movement, combining graceful curves with finely modelled leaf and whiplash ornamentation.
The handles bear the German Crescent Moon and Crown hallmark, together with the 800 silver standard and an unidentified maker's mark.
The blades and functional parts are made of base metal with their original gilded, silver plated finish, a common and practical construction that prevented corrosion and avoided metallic taste when serving food. As customary for hollow silver handles of this period, the interiors are weighted with resin (pitch) for strength and balance.
The set consists of:
Fish serving fork – 26.3 cm
Meat serving fork – 26 cm
Salad serving fork – 21.5 cm
Serving spoon – 20.5 cm
Butter knife – 19.5 cm
Cheese knife – 20 cm
Total gross weight: approximately 383 grams.
The set remains in good antique condition. The silver handles are well preserved with a beautiful patina. The gilding on the serving parts shows expected wear and rubbing from over a century of careful use. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
A refined and versatile Art Nouveau serving ensemble that combines functionality with the elegant craftsmanship of the German silver industry around the turn of the 20th century. Suitable for collectors of Jugendstil silver as well as for practical use on a well-appointed dining table.
