--From locksmith to car manufacturer: Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Borgward (1890–1963) rose from modest circumstances to owner of the third-largest German car company. As inventor and producer of affordable vehicles, he played an important role in the rapid motorization of Germany after World War II. Yet Borgward's career ended in one of the most spectacular bankruptcies in German economic history.
From the postwar years until 1961 the Borgward Group was the largest industrial company in Bremen and an economic engine in northern Germany. At its peak the company employed more than 20,000 people, spread across three car factories (Borgward, Goliath and Lloyd). Under Borgward's leadership, about a million vehicles were produced in total – ranging from the 1931 Hansa Konsul to the technologically innovative and stylish Borgward Isabella and P 100 (introduced in 1954 and 1959 respectively). However, he did not manage to overcome the sales slump of the early 1960s on his own; his entrepreneurial career ended in February 1961.
