1941-1943 – Paillard Bolex Suisse H16 16 mm Camera
The body of this camera is in good cosmetic condition. The leatherette covering is well preserved and shows only a few signs of wear, including a circular mark left by the retractable arm of the leather carrying strap, as well as a few small scratches, probably caused by the winding crank. The polished aluminum parts are in good condition, with no oxidation, showing only a few light marks on the top. The chrome elements show no rust traces. Overall, there are no signs of mushroom contamination or moisture traces.
The upper viewfinder for focusing presents a light veil and a few particles that could hinder use. The side viewfinder is usable but also has a light veil and some dust.
H16 F 27 mm / 75 mm / 15 mm Viewfinder: a few dust particles, cosmetic appearance clean for its age. The parallax correction mechanism works correctly.
The winding lever and mainspring operate perfectly. The shutter button, whether shooting in continuous mode or frame-by-frame, functions normally. The mechanism runs with a steady, fairly quiet sound for its age. The frame counter advances normally, and the camera operates correctly at all speeds once the spring is wound. Frame-by-frame shooting is operational. The continuous operation lock is effective.
However, I was not able to test the reverse crank (“Reverse”). The rotation of the objective turret is smooth and works correctly. A cap is present on one of the C-mounts.
The serial number on the cover matches that of the body.
The camera is supplied with a handmade wooden exhibition stand to display it easily. A 16 mm film take-up reel is also present inside the body.
No other tests were performed; the device has not been tested with an empty film. However, an initial test was made with a film already exposed, which allowed verification that film transport via the mechanism and the claw works correctly.
As for any camera of this era (1941, estimated based on its serial number), regular maintenance will probably be necessary to achieve optimal performance. Replacing the seal foams on the cover will be essential.
