English 19th-century inkwell with S.M. & Co. hallmarks, corresponding to the famous English silversmiths and manufacturers Dampson Mordan & Co., active in London from the 19th century. Founded by Sampson Mordan (initially associated with Gabriel Riddle from 1822–1836). Upon dissolution of the partnership, the business continued under the name S. Mordan & Co. Famous for having patented the renowned mechanical pencils with refillable lead, it also produced a wide range of silver items and collectible trinkets from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
