Large French Art Deco centrepiece bowl designed by Pierre d’Avesn and produced by Daum in Nancy, circa 1930–1935.
This impressive bowl is made from exceptionally clear, heavy moulded glass. Its broad flared form is divided by numerous radiating vertical ribs, which rise from the plain circular central well and continue into the deeply undulating, scalloped rim.
The repeated fluting gives the bowl a strong architectural rhythm while retaining the appearance of an open flower or shell. Light passing through the thick moulded ribs creates pronounced reflections and gives the object a particularly brilliant and sculptural presence.
The model is associated with Pierre d’Avesn, born Pierre Girre, one of the important French glass designers of the Art Deco period.
