The name derives from the spoken Latin aramen (a word already attested in 950) for the late aeramen, a derivative of the Latin word aes which means “copper” or “bronze,” a name preserved in other Indo-European languages.
Copper is the metal that humanity has used for the longest time: objects made of copper have been found dating to 8,700 BC.
Copper is a pinkish or reddish metal, with very high electrical and thermal conductivity, surpassed only by silver; it is very resistant to corrosion (due to a thin patina that forms spontaneously on the surface, initially brown and then green or green-blue) and is non-magnetic. It is easily workable.
