Raw material highly sought after in antiquity for the manufacture of sharp tools (primarily knives) and was one of the commodities that animated trade in the Mediterranean and sustained the economic life of the extraction sites. Today it is still worked into small decorative objects, jewelry, scalpels’ blades.
