Description from the seller

Antique Victorian Mahogany Magic Lantern - W.C. Hughes (London) - Circa 1890

Gorgeous, authentic magic lantern from the late 19th century, manufactured by the renowned London optician and maker W.C. Hughes (Brewster House, Mortimer Road, London). This historical optical instrument is built from a finely patinated mahogany housing with a flexible leather bellows and a heavy, solid brass objective assembly.

The front is in excellent aesthetic condition. The brass shines beautifully and is equipped with the original, swiveling lens cap (flasher) bearing the etched factory name "W.C. HUGHES". Inside there is the original large glass condensing lens, which is still completely intact.

Condition and completeness (For restoration or decoration):
The item is offered explicitly in its current state (as is) for restoration or as a high-quality decorative collector's piece.

The lantern is incomplete:

Present: Mahogany body, leather bellows, complete brass objective lens with Hughes lens cap, and the internal glass condensing lens.

Missing/Not original: The original rear door and the internal light source (gas/oil lamp and reflector mirror) are absent. There is loose modern electrical wiring attached to the underside. The metal top chimney on the upper brass ring is missing. There is no wooden slide holder/carrier provided.
