Old folding merchant/draper’s rule with calculation tables – wood and metal – circa 1880-1910
Curious antique professional instrument for measuring and calculating, probably intended for a cloth merchant, draper or craftsman.
Entirely made of wood with metal elements, hinges and reinforcements. The instrument unfolds thanks to several articulated parts and has a movable arm forming a measuring device.
The various faces bear numerous graduations and numerical tables printed directly on the wood. Notably the inscription “POUCES ANGLAIS” (ENGLISH INCHES), indicating a system for reading or converting different units of measurement.
A technically decorative object, particularly interesting for a collection of antique measuring instruments, commercial equipment or trade tools.
Estimated period: around 1880-1910.
Materials: wood and metal.
Authentic old condition with patina, traces of use, marks and wear consistent with its age. The graduations and inscriptions remain largely visible. The articulated mechanism is preserved.
Dimensions: 23 cm closed, about 37 cm deployed, width 2.5 cm. The articulated mechanism is preserved, graduations and calculation tables still clearly legible.
