1. Cultural origin
• People: Baoulé (Akan group), center of Ivory Coast.
• Typology: A discoid face mask representing the lunar disk, encircled by a notched/festooned crown.
2. Use and function
• Entertainment dances: This is a rejoicing mask used during public village festivities.
• Nighttime and cosmic symbolism: The representation of the lunar disk refers to the world of night, soft light, and renewal.
• Mouth-fixed fastening: Worn by a dancer who holds it firmly against the face by biting the transverse wooden bar visible at the back.
3. Sculpture details
• Disk and rays: Round face framed by a border of petals or rays carved with geometric hatchings.
• Features and scarifications: Narrow eye slits, slender nose, small focused mouth and relief scarification pavings (grain-like) on the cheeks and temples.
• Functional reverse: Roughly worked wood deeply gouged and traversed by the wooden rod (bite).
