A very rare signed copy of Lebensmittel by Michael Schmidt (1945 – 2014). No 53 of a limited, numbered, edition of 1000. The clothbound book is in very good condition with no marks or stains. Slipcase with a small shifting on the edge due to light (see last picture).
Michael Schmidt was a German photographer who focused on Berlin and explored the burden of German identity within modern history. Schmidt started photographing West Berlin's streets, buildings, and people in 1965, using a semi-documentary style. He continued creating ambitious projects in the city with an increasingly impressionistic approach, up until his passing in 2014. Each project was first exhibited, then published as a book.
Lebensmittel took seven years to make. Schmidt photographed across the spectrum of mass food production, from factory farms including salmon farms and dairy farms, and bread factories, to industrial slaughterhouses and on to plastic-wrapped, sanitised portions of food in supermarkets.
Lebensmittel won the Prix Pictet in 2014 and the book is mentioned in The Photobook: A History, volume III by Parr and Badger.
