Description from the seller

"Small Orthodox icon depicting Saint Pantaleon (Panteleimon), a physician-saint and healer highly venerated in the Eastern tradition. The saint is depicted frontally with classic garments and a medical tablet/couch in the hand.

The icon features a gilded background decorated with punched motifs, an ornamental element typical of devotional production from the late nineteenth century or early twentieth century. Tempera on wood panel.

Conservation conditions severely compromised: widespread losses of preparatory layer and gilding, lateral abrasions, detachments and significant wear along the edges. Nevertheless, the saint’s face remains legible and decoratively pleasing.

A small work likely intended for private devotion or travel."

"Small Orthodox icon depicting Christ Pantocrator within a metal repoussé frame with floral and radiating motifs. Christ’s face is painted, while the metal covering surrounds the rest of the composition according to Russian devotional tradition.

The icon is set in a wooden case with a front glass, a typical feature of domestic devotional icons from the early twentieth century.

Likely Russian production or from Eastern Europe, made between the late 19th and early 20th century. The covering appears to be silvered metal or nickel silver (alpacca); it does not look like solid silver from the photograph.

Fair condition with oxidations, wear to the wooden support, and signs of time consistent with age."

"Small Orthodox icon depicting a holy martyr, probably Paraskeva, Barbara, or another female figure venerated in the Eastern tradition. The saint is shown frontally with the cross of martyrdom and a veil, within a distinctive polygonal-shaped board.

Tempera on wooden board with a gold-brown background and simple highlighting. Russian popular production intended for private domestic devotion.

The work shows widespread wear, abrasions and partial loss of the pictorial surface, but preserves a pleasant antique patina and an unusual decorative size compared to classic rectangular boards.

Likely realization: Russia, second half of the 19th century."
