Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Mangwetou, a single argile anthropomorphic vessel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, influenced by the Mangbetu, stands 39 cm high and 18 cm wide, weighs 2 g, comes from a private collection, and is an original work in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
The anthropomorphic vessels mostly feature a female face.
They all share the same characteristics: elongated hairstyles and stretched eyes...
The 'generous' are those pots intended to collect palm wine.
Under Meje influence (a neighboring people), they display a mouth partly open revealing pointed teeth (a reference to cannibalism), ears protruding, sometimes adorned with necklaces and scarifications.
The 'Mangbetu myth' rested on descriptions sometimes 'embellished' of the court's refinement but also on rumors of cannibalism. (Wasn't King Munza nicknamed the 'Cannibal Prince'!).
