Old Chokwe/Tshokwe carved panel from Angola, remarkable for its powerful high-relief male visage and its finely engraved geometric decoration. The half-closed eyes, the dented mouth and the scarifications convey the spiritual authority associated with the ancestors and the initiates of Mukanda societies. This type of panel was used in initiation rites and ceremonial spaces, serving to protect, transmit clan memory and affirm social prestige. The balanced composition and the rich patina attest to the aesthetic refinement characteristic of the great Chokwe workshops.
