Anthropomorphic figure with Senufo influences – West Africa

This wooden sculpture presents a male figure with features characteristic of West Africa, clearly evoking the Senufo stylistic corpus: elongated face, almond-shaped eyes, straight, prominent nose, mouth discreetly slightly open, all treated with great formal sobriety and controlled expressive tension.

The overall stance of the figure, standing, slightly braced, conveys a presence that is both hieratic and embodied, typical of certain ancient productions, where frontal gaze does not exclude movement or individualisation.

The sculpted clothing is a particularly interesting element: the upper body appears to be clad in an outfit inspired by colonial fashion, noticeable in the treatment of the collar and the upper garment. This detail suggests a work created during a period of contact and transition, probably in the first half of the 20th century, a moment when sculptors sometimes incorporated exogenous elements into their traditional formal vocabulary without abandoning their own language.

Another notable detail is the presence of an object worn on the shoulder, which can be interpreted as a cane. This type of cane is well documented in West Africa, notably among the Senufo, but also among the Lobi, where it can symbolize status, authority, wisdom, or membership in a specific social or initiatory category.
