Medieval Bellarmine jug in Raeren stoneware.
Glazed salt-glazed stoneware jug dating from the Renaissance period, featuring at the base of its neck a bearded man's head in relief.
It is adorned at the center with a medallion on the belly bearing a coat of arms.
These jugs, known under the name “Bartmann krug,” were made between 1580 and 1650 mainly in the towns of Frechen and Raeren.
Height: 29.2 cm – diameter 18.5 cm
Dating: End of the 16th century / First half of the 17th century.
Excellent condition - intact
Provenance: Germany, M.Y.R. gallery..
Previously: Collection of Northern Germany
According to tradition, the bearded head on the neck of the jar is supposed to represent God.
According to another explanation, it would be an act of vengeance against the potters of Cologne, driven out of the city in the 16th century because of the toxic gas released during firing. Many potters then settled in Frechen.
In England, Bartmann Jugs have been called Bellarmines since the 17th century.
