Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Neolithic stone combat axe from Thailand, polished grey basalt, dating to 5000–3000 BCE, with a central hole for a haft, measuring 13.5 cm long by 7.9 cm wide and weighing 1.05 kg, in good condition with an ancient patina; provenance France (Galerie B.N.M.) from a Belgian private collection and legally obtained as original.
Description from the seller
Stone axe dating from the Neolithic period.
Big polished grey hard rock hammer axe, probably basalt.
This lithic combat axe was worked from a single block of quarried stone. In the center, there is a hole designed for a handle and one end has a more pointed shape.
Neolithic culture combat axes were used as weapons of battle. As shown here, they were heavy and robust pieces, capable of striking the enemy with a blunt force.
They were used for both hunting and warfare.
The archaeological discovery of the lithic industry (stone tools) is an obvious sign of human activity and progress.
During the Neolithic period, the stone industry reached a high degree of skill and evolution (in fact, the very name "Neolithic" – new stone – reflects a new way of working stone, which would be polished as opposed to the flaked stone of the Paleolithic, a change that represents a true technological revolution).
During the Neolithic period, sickles, hoes, and axes like the one presented here began to be made, which facilitate agricultural and livestock processes and allow domination of the environment.
As a result, peasant populations secured their means of subsistence and were thus able to settle down.
This axe comes from an ancient private collection; it was found in Thailand.
It is in very good condition, roughly polished across its entire surface, and has an ancient patina.
It is dated to the 6th / 4th millennium BCE.
Dimensions: Length 13.5 cm - width 7.9 cm - weight 1.05 kg
