Lega masks have a standard design, but there are also unique masks with symbolic and ceremonial meaning, made for special occasions. The life of the Lega is regulated by the Bwami, to which both men and women belong. There are seven levels for men and four for women. Masks were used for initiation into the first two levels of the Bwami community and were repainted with Pembe each time before they were used or displayed.

Het leven van de Lega wordt gereguleerd door de Bwami, waartoe zowel mannen als vrouwen behoren. Er zijn zeven niveaus voor mannen en vier voor vrouwen. Maskers werden gebruikt voor de initiatie tot de eerste twee niveaus van de Bwami-gemeenschap en werden telkens opnieuw beschilderd met Pembe voordat ze werden gebruikt of tentoongesteld.
