"Johannes Anton (John) Rädecker, also written Raedecker (Amsterdam, 5 September 1885 – there, 12 January 1956) was a Dutch sculptor, painter and draftsman. Rädecker is best known for his contribution to the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam, where he invited Adriaan Roland Holst to serve as lyricist. Because of his death he could not finish everything. His sons Han and Jan Willem Rädecker did that. He died on the day the statue "Maria and the Child" was placed.
Jan, later John, Rädecker was a son of the German-born sculptor Wilhelm Rädecker (1851-1936) and Anna Gosseling (1851-1921). He took sculpture lessons from his father at the evening drawing school for artisans, the First Art School of the Society for the Working, and spent some time at the Drawing School for Fine Crafts. He continued his education at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam and also in the evenings at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. His breakthrough came already in 1910, when he created a number of luminist paintings. He moved to Paris for a few years (1911-1914). He married Anni de Roos in 1913 and remarried after a divorce in 1918 to Jo (Anni) ten Herkel, sister of one of his friends.
After World War I his work became innovative. His sculptures featured human and animal figures in a style that was unknown at the time. After Paris he settled in Bergen where he became part of De Nieuwe Kring, a group of visual artists and literary figures with a strong communal ideal that opposed advancing technology.
In 1926 the artist association 'De Brug' was founded, of which in the beginning Rädecker, Charley Toorop, Dick Ket and Johan Polet were members. In the 1920s and 1930s Rädecker was regarded as the leading Dutch sculptor. He is counted among the Amsterdam School. His style is related to the Bergense School.
Rädecker worked on some sculptures together with family members or with other artists. For the National Monument he collaborated with his sons and his brother Anton, and was assisted by the sculptor George van der Wagt. Together with one of his sons he also created the National Army Monument at the Grebbeberg.
