Two antique bentwood chairs in Thonet style, dated ca. 1900–1910, in beech wood with richly decorated seats and backs in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Set of 2 antique curved wooden chairs – richly pressed seat and decorative back – ca. 1900
Special matching pair of two antique café/salon chairs in Thonet style, probably produced around 1900.
The chairs are constructed from beautifully curved wood and stand out especially for their very rich decoration. Both the back rails and the round wooden seats are adorned with ornamentation.
The seats feature a striking radial fan/palmette motif, while the back rails are decorated with stylized floral motifs, volutes and geometric elements. The back rail is also ornamented. As a result, these pieces are considerably more decorative than many simple bentwood café chairs from the same period.
The construction shows typical features of historic bentwood furniture production: slender curved lines, round connecting elements and screwed fastenings. On one of the chairs there is an old, partially preserved factory/trade stamp on the underside, visible in the photos. Because it is not fully legible, no maker can be identified with certainty.
The chairs have a lovely, clearly lived-in look. The dark finish shows wear, scratches, loss of varnish and other signs of age and use, particularly around the seats and legs.
This gives the set an authentic patina that suits the presumed age.
Period: ca. 1890–1910
Quantity: 2 chairs
Material: wood, presumably beech
Technique: bentwood / bentwood, pressed and decorated wooden seats
Style: Thonet style / Viennese bentwood
Condition: authentic used condition with clear signs of age and use.
An attractive and decorative set for collectors of historical bentwood furniture, but also very suitable for use in a classical, eclectic or café interior.
See the extensive photo series for the decoration, construction, old stamp and condition.
