Rough Ethiopian opal, crystal form, weight 60.56 g (302.80 ct), dimensions approximately 45 × 30 × 35 mm, displaying a warm honey yellow to cognac colour with iridescent play and natural matrix.
Description from the seller
Ethiopian rough opal – 302.80 ct – 45 × 30 × 35 mm – Play of color & natural matrix
Exceptionally large rough opal from Ethiopia with a weight of 302.80 carats and a size of about 45 × 30 × 35 mm.
The uncut piece shows a warm base color ranging from honey yellow, golden yellow, orange, to cognac. Depending on the light, individual areas range from translucent to clearly transparent.
Particularly interesting is the opalescent play of color already visible in the untreated rough state. In direct light, vivid green, yellow-green, orange, and red flashes appear in different regions, sometimes with small point- and area-shaped color reflections. The macro shots especially reveal strong orange-red and green effects within the honey-colored opal material.
Natural matrix and inclusions
The piece still has clearly visible natural host rock/matrix portions. Gray, beige to dark brown patches traverse or bound individual areas of the opal, documenting the original rough state.
In addition, numerous natural internal features are present:
* matrix and rock inclusions
* darker mineral inclusions
* natural growth and structural zones
* transparent to translucent areas
* internal cracks and fracture lines
* natural depressions and irregular surfaces
It is precisely the connection between opal and the original matrix that makes the piece interesting as a mineralogical collecting specimen.
Play of color
In the detail shots it is evident that the color effect does not consist solely of the yellow-orange body color. Under suitable lighting, genuine contrasting color phenomena appear within the material.
Particularly visible are:
Red – Orange – Yellow – Yellow-green – Green
Some areas show a fine speckled play of color, others larger diffuse color fields. Since the piece is completely raw and uncut, the surface alone does not allow assessment of how the color play would develop in deeper layers after proper processing.
Condition
Naturally raw opal – uncut and unpolished.
The surface shows the typical irregularities, fracture surfaces, matrix remnants, depressions, and natural crack structures of a rough piece. These are part of the offered specimen and are documented in detail in the numerous macro shots.
