Set of 2 Antique Boxwood & Brass 4-Fold Rules - E. Preston & Stanley "Sweetheart" - c. 1890-1935

A beautiful, highly collectible cross-continental set of two authentic antique 4-fold carpenter's measuring rules. This lot combines the premier craftsmanship of both British and American industrial toolmakers from the golden era of hardware production. Both pieces exhibit a gorgeous, untouched aged patina on the boxwood and natural oxidation on the solid brass hinges, proving their rich history.

1. E. Preston & Sons (Birmingham, England) – c. 1890–1915

A true late-Victorian to Edwardian antique rule. It features exceptionally clean, deep, and crisp early serif stamping on the wood face reading: "E. PRESTON & SONS, BIRMINGHAM - WARRANTED BOXWOOD".

Preston tools are legendary among collectors for their high-quality engineering before the company was absorbed in 1932.

2. Stanley No. 78½ (Made in U.S.A.) – c. 1920–1935
Closed Dimensions: 16.5 x 3.4 x 1.8 cm
Total Extended Length: 61 cm

An authentic interwar-era 4-fold rule featuring the highly sought-after Stanley "Sweetheart" logo (the letters "S.W." enclosed inside a heart emblem).

This specific trademark was only used for a brief 15-year window following the merger of The Stanley Works and the Stanley Rule & Level Company, making it a prime target for modern tool collectors.

Condition: Both rules open, fold, and align exactly as intended for practical use or display.
There are no splits, dry cracks, or warping in the boxwood sections, and no missing alignment pins. The brass components show only natural, historical surface oxidation and light surface wear consistent with age
