Ceiling lamp - Glass, Chrome, Steel

Italian vintage pendant lamp, probably produced in the 1960s/1970s. The lamp is a beautiful example of Italian modernism from this period, in which traditional Murano glasswork was combined with the futuristic vocabulary of Space Age design."

The most striking component is the large, rounded glass shade. It is made of thick clear glass in which broad, organically shaped white glass bands have been incorporated. These white ribbons seem to float through and around the transparent glass. Because the pattern is not strictly geometrical but fluid and asymmetrical, the shade presents a different appearance from every viewing angle. This kind of decorative glasswork gives the lamp its pronounced sculptural character.

When the lamp is switched on, the glass comes to life in a particularly beautiful way. The warm light from the light source spreads through the transparent part and softly illuminates the white glass bands. This creates a warm, atmospheric glow without losing the distinctive pattern in the glass. Even when the lamp is not lit, the glass shade remains an attractive decorative object.

The shade is accented at both the top and bottom by chromed metal elements. At the bottom there is a broad circular chrome rim around the open underside of the shade. This keeps the light source visible and allows for the use of a decorative filament or warm-white LED lamp.

Above the glass sits a prominent elongated cylindrical metal housing. The smooth metal contrasts nicely with the glass and transitions at the top into a black ribbed section, finished with a half-round chromed element. This combination of shiny chrome, black, and mouth-blown glass gives the lamp the recognizable futuristic look that is so characteristic of Italian design from the sixties and seventies.

The suspension is also interestingly designed. Above the fixture, a black spiral cable is visible, paired with a metal support cable. This technical detail resonates well with the industrial and Space Age character of the design.

The various detail photos also show well how the lamp is built. The metal mounting plate above the glass is equipped with several ventilation openings, and the light source is centrally located inside the glass shade. At the bottom, the socket remains accessible through the large circular opening.

Condition

The lamp is in good vintage condition, appropriate for the age of the object. The glass presents well, and the distinctive white decoration is clearly and strongly present.

Normal signs of use and aging are present on the chromed and metal parts, including superficial scratches, small spots, and localized patina/oxidation. Particularly on some chromed parts, these signs of aging are visible up close. In my opinion, this slightly detracts little from the overall appearance and underlines the authentic vintage character of the lamp.

Style and application

Thanks to the combination of Murano glass, chrome, black, and the rounded futuristic form, this pendant lamp fits very well within Mid-Century Modern, Space Age, Hollywood Regency, or eclectic interiors.

It is a lamp that can look equally impressive above a dining table or in a hall, living room, bedroom, or stylish hospitality space. Its relatively calm color scheme also makes it easy to pair with both vintage and contemporary furniture.
