Table lamp (2) - Wood - Lamp / Torchiere (82 cm.)

Portuguese tocheiro / candeeiro, from the 18th century, executed in carved wood, in the taste of D. Joseph, subsequently adapted to a table lamp. The piece presents a vertical composition of markedly sculptural character, resting on a cut and tripartite base, formed by wide, voluted feet, joined by curvilinear and embossed elements. The base is richly worked with scrolls, shell motifs, foliage and rocaille-inspired designs, characteristic of the Rococo decorative language spread in Portugal during the reign of D. Joseph I. The central body develops from a moulded plinth, rising into a turned and carved shaft, with a lively profile, articulated by successive constrictions, reliefs and decorative reserves. Along the shaft one observes vegetal motifs and asynchronous design elements, with curves and counter-curves that reinforce the elegance and dynamism of the composition. In the lower zone of the shaft, the decoration becomes more exuberant, with projecting volutes and foliate elements that integrate organically into the base. The upper part likewise presents successive framed rings and carvings, culminating in the contemporary electrical adaptation. The wood preserves an old patina and signs of aging, with surface wear, small losses and marks compatible with the piece’s antiquity, contributing to preserve the historical character of the object. Originally conceived as a tocheiro or candle illumination element, it was later electrified and adapted into a lamp, the old structure remaining as a base. It is currently equipped with a light-colored lampshade, of conical-truncated shape, decorated with a galloon in beige and brown tones. The design of the base, the richness of the carving and the presence of rocaille motifs allow the piece to be framed within Portuguese furniture and decorative arts of the D. José period, marked by the assimilation of French Rococo taste and its interpretation in national workshops.
