A charming Victorian sewing / work box dating from the 19th century, beautifully decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay.
The wooden exterior features attractive natural grain and is decorated throughout with delicate floral and foliate inlaid motifs. The lid features a particularly attractive central composition with stylised birds, flowers and foliage. The box opens to reveal a distinctive blue interior. The underside of the lid retains the original decorative ruched silk panel, surrounded by an ornate red and gilt patterned border. The box retains its brass hinges, lock and decorative mother-of-pearl keyhole escutcheon. No key is included.
The box is in antique condition with age-related signs of use. There are surface marks, scratches and wear to the wood consistent with its age. Please note that several small pieces of the decorative inlay are missing from the front of the lid, as clearly visible in the photographs. The interior shows age-related wear, staining and deterioration to the ruched silk panel and lining. The brass fittings show natural age-related patina.
Despite these age-related imperfections, the box retains much of its original decorative character.
