Description from the seller

Antique Savonarola / Renaissance Revival Armchair – 19th/20th Century – Carved Wood and Velvet

Elegant and highly decorative antique armchair with a distinctive X-shaped frame, inspired by historic Italian Renaissance seating models commonly known as Savonarola chairs or curule-style chairs.

The chair features a beautifully shaped solid wooden structure with sweeping curves, sculpted side supports, elegant curved armrests and crossed arched legs. At the centre of the lower structure is a decorative carved rosette, while the upper section is dominated by a finely shaped and ornamented wooden crest.

The upper crest is particularly impressive, with a highly decorative profile, curved contours and symmetrical carved details. At its centre is a large oval medallion containing a warm ochre/golden textile insert, surrounded by carved and moulded wooden decoration.

The curved armrests are another important feature, with sculptural shaping and elegant carved terminals. Their flowing form contrasts beautifully with the geometric X-shaped construction of the lower frame.

The seat is upholstered in mustard/ochre velvet, finished at the front with an attractive decorative fringe secured with small metallic studs. The combination of the golden textile and the warm reddish-brown wooden patina gives the chair a particularly rich and sophisticated appearance.

Style and Period

The design is strongly inspired by Italian Renaissance furniture, subsequently reinterpreted during the Historicist / Renaissance Revival period.

Based on its construction, decoration and overall design, the armchair can be stylistically dated approximately to the late 19th or early 20th century.

It is an appealing piece for collectors of historical furniture and would work particularly well in classical, eclectic, Renaissance Revival or vintage interiors.

Construction

The chair is constructed from shaped and curved wooden elements assembled to create the characteristic X-frame. The central lower section incorporates turned and carved decorative elements, while the upper crest is enriched with mouldings, carved details and an oval central panel.

The combination of carved wood, shaped structural elements and velvet upholstery demonstrates the decorative approach typical of historicist furniture.

Condition

Vintage/antique condition consistent with age and previous use. The wooden frame shows normal signs of age, including minor scratches, abrasions, variations in patina and other small traces of use. The velvet upholstery also shows signs of age and use, with some natural wear and imperfections.

The photographs clearly document the overall condition, including the structure and underside, allowing the buyer to assess the piece accurately.

The chair should be appreciated as an antique collector’s piece, where the marks and patina accumulated over time contribute to its authenticity and character.

Suggested Use

An excellent decorative armchair, reading chair or accent piece for a living room, library, study, entrance hall or bedroom. It could also make an impressive addition to a boutique, hotel, showroom or professional interior.

Its strong decorative presence means it can also be displayed primarily as a collector’s and design object.
