Description from the seller
Ring of Australian opal / new
Set in 925 sterling silver
Weight: 1.60 g
7.1 mm x 4.5 mm
New and unworn
Ring size:
U 54
UK N
US 6.8
Fr 14
Inner diameter: 17.2 mm
The opal is a mineral of the mineral class “oxides and hydroxides.” As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and usually appears as a massive vein filling or knobby formation.
Opals are processed exclusively into gemstones.
The word opal is derived from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and probably goes back to upala in Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, it was used to denote various rocks, while early Hungarians called opal mines opálbánya nan tan.
Opals were regarded in antiquity as particularly valuable gems, sometimes even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote: “[…] it has a fire, finer than the carbunculus, it possesses the purple spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald and an altogether incredible play of light.”
