This Neumann KM84i is from the first “Silver” series and is completely original. The KM 84 small-diaphragm cardioid microphone (the “i” indicates the XLR connection) is a FET condenser mic, built from 1966 and has remained one of Neumann’s greatest successes in its history. Its uniform frequency response across its polar pattern makes it a highly sought-after microphone for all genres and instruments.
It was the first in the world made with 48V phantom power technology.
The 10 dB pad allows the microphone to be used up to a sound pressure level of 130 dB without distortion.
The exceptional consistency of the off-axis polar response of the excellent KK64 capsule is achieved thanks to an innovative rear-plate design developed by Neumann in 1964: the eight intersecting grooves enable sound to be distributed more uniformly across the diaphragm.
