Vintage Japanese Deba & Yanagiba Kitchen Knife Set – Munetsugu-saku (宗次作) / Sakai Ryujin (堺龍神) – Traditional Japanese Knives

A distinctive set of two vintage Japanese kitchen knives, consisting of a traditional Deba and Yanagiba, both bearing Japanese maker inscriptions.

These two classic blade forms represent important elements of traditional Japanese fish preparation: the substantial Deba for heavier preparation work and the long, slender Yanagiba for controlled slicing.

Both knives retain traditional Japanese-style wooden handles and display the attractive character and patina associated with genuine vintage kitchen tools.

1. Deba – 宗次作 (Munetsugu-saku)

The Deba is engraved:

宗次作 – "Munetsugu-saku"

It features the characteristic broad and substantial blade profile of a traditional Japanese Deba, a knife historically developed primarily for fish preparation.

The blade shows clear evidence of previous use and age, giving it the authentic appearance of a vintage Japanese working knife.

Approximate dimensions:

Overall length: 31 cm
Blade length: 17 cm
2. Yanagiba – 堺龍神 (Sakai Ryujin)

The Yanagiba is engraved:

堺龍神 – "Sakai Ryujin"

The wooden handle is also marked:

堺龍神作 – "Sakai Ryujin-saku"

A surviving label around the ferrule refers to Sakai cutting quality and the Sakai Cutlery Wholesale Cooperative Association (堺利器卸協同組合).

With a blade measuring approximately 24 cm, this knife has the long and narrow profile characteristic of the traditional Yanagiba, developed for smooth slicing of fish and other precise Japanese culinary work.

Approximate dimensions:

Overall length: 36 cm
Blade length: 24 cm
An Attractive Pair of Traditional Japanese Knife Forms

This set combines two highly recognizable Japanese knife types: the robust Deba and elegant, elongated Yanagiba.

The engraved Japanese maker names, traditional wooden handles, surviving Sakai label and visible signs of long-term use give these knives considerable vintage character.

They would make an interesting set for collectors of Japanese cutlery as well as experienced users looking for vintage knives to clean, sharpen and maintain themselves.
