Originally, the mask, called grè in Bété, is a traditional entity from the mountainous west. The glè comes from the word gla of the Guere ethnicity. It has undergone transformations throughout its journey.
The Bété masks usually appear during joyous or unfortunate events.
Since there are not really any traditional festivals, the masks are invoked during celebrations.
The Bété African masks also emerge during days of large gatherings, especially on days of community processions.
