Description from the seller

Art Deco sculpture mother with child with gold decorations – natural stone plinth – France – c. 1925–1940

Object description

Large and heavy Art Deco sculpture of a mother with her young child, presumably of French origin and dating from circa 1925–1940.

The depiction shows a seated mother lovingly and protectively holding her child against her. Her head rests against that of the child, while the child lies relaxed on her lap. The composition forms an intimate portrayal of maternal affection and security.

The figures are carefully formed, with much attention to facial expressions, flowing strands of hair, hands, feet, and the rich drapery folds of the garment. The elongated lines and stylized design nicely align with the decorative vocabulary of the Art Deco period.

Particularly notable are the gold-colored stylized ornaments on the dark garment. These consist of fine lines, dots and geometric-floral motifs and create an attractive contrast with the dark patinated finish of the sculpture.

The sculpture stands on a large elongated oval two-tone natural stone plinth, consisting of a light cream/white marbled upper plate and a contrasting black lower section with light veining. The combination of the dark sculpture, gold-colored decorations and two-tone natural stone gives the whole an elegant and luxurious appearance.

With a width of about 47 cm and a total weight of about 7 kg, it is a large, heavy and substantial decorative object.
