PAIR OF ROCOCO MINIATURES – GALLANT SCENES IN THE MANNER OF FRANÇOIS BOUCHER – SIGNED “JEAN” AND “VASCO A.G.”

Refined pair of hand-painted European miniatures, depicting gallant and pastoral scenes inspired by the pictorial universe of François Boucher (1703–1770) and the elegance of 18th-century French Rococo.

The two compositions capture pastoral idylls in a lush setting, populated by elegantly costumed characters, in an intimate and sentimental atmosphere characteristic of the fêtes galantes repertoire. The bright chromatics, the ample draperies, the flowers, the vegetation and the delicacy of the characters clearly evoke the French decorative tradition associated with Boucher and his circle.

Despite their very small dimensions, only 9.8 × 7.8 cm, the miniatures impress with the finesse of their execution: the facial features, gazes, hairstyles, hands, costumes and flowers are rendered with remarkable attention to detail, giving the scenes a special expressiveness.

An interesting element is the individually painted signatures: one of the works is legibly signed “Jean”, and the second bears the signature “Vasco A.G.”.

The miniatures form a decorative pendant, being presented in identical oval mounts, surrounded by textile passe-partout and framed in superb paired carved, gilded and patinated frames, in the Rococo Revival / Louis XV style, richly decorated with volutes, rocaille and openwork elements. The frames contribute substantially to the character and decorative presence of the ensemble.

European School, first half of the 20th century.

Miniature dimensions: 9.8 × 7.8 cm each.
Framed dimensions: 20 × 22 cm each.
Signatures: “Jean” and “Vasco A.G.”
Style: Rococo Revival / Louis XV, in the manner of 18th-century French gallant scenes.

A particularly decorative and elegant pair, distinguished by the miniature size of the painting, the fineness of the execution and the spectacular Rococo Revival paired frames, the ensemble preserving a remarkable visual unity.
