Description:
We celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi with two coins, two coins that strive to crystallize significant moments in the life of this illustrious scientist, an emblematic figure in the history of telecommunications and Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909: the €2 bi-metallic coin in prooflike and mirror finishes, and the €25 colored silver coin in the mirror-finish version. The €25 coin features on both sides the symbols of Marconi's pioneering and innovative work. On the reverse, the artist Daniela Longo presents, in the foreground, the bust of the great inventor; beside it we see three antennas from which radio waves radiate in the background. On the obverse, an angel turns its figure toward the coat of arms of Pope Francis and toward the ship Elettra. Guglielmo Marconi bought it in 1919 to transform it into an innovative floating laboratory. It became a true mobile station, where the inventor could work with notable ease of movement at any time of day. His scientific experiments were to be conducted at different distances to test the effectiveness of transmissions according to the distance between transmitter and receiver. The “white ship”, so described by poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, allowed Marconi to revolutionize sea communications and became a symbol of progress and modernity.
