Description from the seller
SUBJECT: Saint Nicholas
DATE: XVIII century.
ORIGIN: Russia
DIMENSIONS: cm. 35x40x2
NOTES: On the back of the panel is the export permit no. 007597
Tempera on panel
Saint Nicholas depicted in half-bust, wearing episcopal robes adorned with crosses, blessing with the right hand while the left holds the Gospel. Inscribed in two small roundels at the sides of the saint’s head are Jesus Christ and the Virgin.
The iconographic type of Saint Nicholas in episcopal attire, blessing with the Gospel, dates to the 10th-11th centuries. In the life of the 9th-10th centuries it is told that Christ and the Virgin themselves took part in the episcopal enthronement of the Saint, delivering to him the Gospel (symbol of the word of God, preaching) and the omophorion (a wide scarf decorated with crosses), a sign of episcopal dignity, symbol of pastoral care. This meaning, after the 14th century, was forgotten in favor of the so-called "Miracle of Nicea". Nicholas of fiery character did not tolerate what Arius said about the person of Jesus and, during the Council, he slapped him, for this he was deposed and imprisoned. But Christ and the Virgin visited him in confinement and returned to him the Gospel and the omophorion. Many icons with hagiographic (celebrating the person) and epic (illustrating the life) subjects exist, where at the center the iconographer places the image of the saint in half-bust or full figure.
