Saint Clare of Assisi before the Blessed Sacrament – 17th century
Religious painting on copper, probably from the 17th century, depicting Saint Clare of Assisi in the habit of the Poor Clares, aureoled and holding the Blessed Sacrament before her in an ostensorium.
This iconography, particularly widespread from the 17th century, refers to the episode during which Saint Clare, then ill, faced the troops threatening the Monastery of San Damiano, by presenting the Eucharist. The ostensorium thus becomes her major iconographic attribute.
The saint is depicted from the waist up, her face inclined with gentle calm, dressed in sober tones of brown, beige and white characteristic of the Franciscan universe. She carefully holds an ostensorium of architectural shape, surmounted by a small dome, at the center of which the consecrated host is distinctly visible.
