Antique Victorian footstool by Rose & Bird, ca. 1880–1885, in ebonised hardwood with gold accents and a deep green velour upholstery.
Description from the seller
For sale: An extraordinarily elegant and fully authentic Victorian footstool of high-quality British craftsmanship. This unique piece of furniture is equipped on the underside with the original copper maker’s badge from the renowned cabinet makers and upholsterers Rose & Bird, located at 4 Bishop Street, Stockton-on-Tees, dating from the early 1880s (c. 1880-1885).
Style & Design
Although manufactured in England, the design is strongly inspired by the refined French Napoleon III style, which was very popular among the British elite at the time. The stool features a beautiful round ebonised wooden frame, supported by four solid turned legs. The edge of the frame is hand-decorated with refined gold-colored inlay work (incised floral motifs) and decorative gold piping.
Upholstery
The generous, bulging seat is upholstered in a sumptuous, deep green ciselé velvet fabric (velours d’Utrecht) featuring a wonderful organic relief pattern that bears strong resemblance to the iconic historical tiger- and panther-motifs. The fabric gives the piece a rich, luxurious appearance and seamlessly fits the eclectic Victorian era.
